FriendlyLight® Erbium Laser For Skin Resurfacing

Dr. Michael H. Gold Presents
FriendlyLight Er:YAG Laser at ASLMS 2005

Our Er: YAG Laser is the most compact full-power erbium laser available on the market. FriendlyLight Erbium offers the power output and efficiency needed to perform a broad range of cosmetic and dermatology surgery procedures while being truly portable, maintenance-free and easy to use. Physicians who use the FriendlyLight erbium laser report very high patient satisfaction. They also rate our product highly in terms of efficiency, safety, portability, easy maintenance and affordability (see Expert Opinions below). More info - Aesthetic Buyers Guide: FriendlyLight Laser Achieves Effective Skin Resurfacing with Minimal Patient Discomfort

The FriendlyLight Er:YAG Laser weighs only 20 pounds and is conveniently packaged in an aluminum briefcase, which will fit into the smallest treatment room and can be easily hand-carried between offices. This true portability enables physicians to treat more patients with greater efficiency and at a lower cost. FriendlyLight lasers use a conventional 110V electric supply and release practically no heat into the operation room.

Erbium skin resurfacing is the most efficient modern procedure to treat sun damaged skin as well as superficial and moderately deep wrinkles on the face, neck, chest and hands. Light energy at the wavelength of 2940 nm is almost 100% absorbed by water (16 times more than with a CO2 laser), allowing physicians to use the Er:YAG irradiation to treat only the top superficial layer of skin without inflicting a thermal injury to the surrounding tissue. Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I to III are ideal candidates for treatment with the Er:YAG laser. However, because of the minimal thermal damage created by the Er:YAG laser, patients with skin types IV and V may also be treated with a lower incidence of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Highest quality results (see FriendlyLight patient photos) coupled with low discomfort and short or no down time for a patient is making Erbium resurfacing one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Skin resurfacing with FriendlyLight lasers is an easy and comfortable procedure for both patient and physician. Our laser is designed to perform quick and efficient ablation of lesions while producing less heating or burning of surrounding tissues than previously available lasers used for deep resurfacing. In most cases FriendlyLight lasers require only a topical anesthetic. FriendlyLight Erbium can be used on a full face or on a small area for resurfacing without producing a demarcation line. This allows for efficient combinations of laser resurfacing with other cosmetic procedures such as blepharoplasty (see FriendlyLight patient photos), rhinoplasty and others, as well as with Botox treatments (see FriendlyLight patient photos). For example, 100-micron ablation in the periorbital area with FriendlyLight lasers typically takes less than 15 minutes and less than 10 minutes in the perioral area (for details see Clinical Study on Cosmetic Surgery Use of FriendlyLight Er:YAG presented at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery). FriendlyLight Erbium is also an ideal instrument for the ablation/removal of many cutaneous lesions (see FriendlyLight patient photos) such as Seborrheic Keratosis, Actinic Keratosis, Lentigines, Epidermal Nevus, Benign Nevi, Xanthelasma, Syringomas, Sebaceous Hyperplasia, Warts, Melasma, Milia, Acrochordons, Dermatosis Papilosa Nigra, Hypertrophic Scars, Rhinophyma, Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ (Bowen Disease), Zoon Balanitis etc. Such epidermal lesions can be removed without damaging the dermis, minimizing the risk of scarring. For details see Clinical Study on Ablation of Cutaneous Lesions using an Erbium:YAG Laser presented at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.

Compact and TrulyPortable®
FriendlyLight technologies have resulted in highly miniaturized laser-based products. FriendlyLight TrulyPortable Er: YAG Laser weighs only 20 pounds and is conveniently packaged in an attractive aluminum briefcase, which will fit into the smallest treatment room and can be easily hand-carried between offices. This true portability will enable physicians to treat more patients with greater efficiency.

Air Cooled
Other instruments currently available in the U.S. for similar applications are more expensive and cumbersome due to their dependence on water or fluid-based cooling systems. FriendlyLight TrulyPortable lasers are air-cooled and generate less heat.

Uses Conventional 110 V Electric Power Supply

Easy to Use and Maintenance- Free
FriendlyLight lasers are user-friendly and do not require any assembly or adjustment before use.

Reliable and Trouble- Free
FriendlyLight technologies provide for increased reliability in operation. In an unlikely event that the system fails or needs to be serviced, we will minimize your practice down time by shipping a loaner device via an overnight courier and pick up the faulted one for prompt service.

Offering Aesthetic Laser Therapy Without Transforming Your Practice
The demand for cash-paying aesthetic procedures is booming, and laser devices have become the primary modality for a wide range of applications. A recent research report indicates that light-based treatments including hair removal and skin rejuvenation earn more than $3.1 billion a year for practitioners. Given this opportunity and the declining reimbursements related to managed care, many physicians have begun to offer aesthetic laser procedures to create new revenue.

Erbium and Nd:YAG (1064nm) lasers are very popular because they deliver high energy to selective tissue targets (e.g., melanin, hemoglobin, water). FriendlyLight has taken these two ‘gold-standard’ modalities and built them into laser devices that are uniquely affordable, simple to operate and maintenance-free; physicians can generate a profit quickly without overburdening their staff or cost structure. Also, FriendlyLight lasers are compact and portable (weighing just 22 pounds and built into a briefcase-style unit), so they fit into small treatment rooms without consuming a lot of space and can be easily moved from one clinical site to another, expanding the potential customer base.

FriendlyLight lasers also provide a unique combination of high efficacy with a wide patient safety margin. The MicroPulse™ Nd:YAG 1064nm laser delivers energy in a short 0.65msec pulse width, avoiding the pain and non-selective tissue damage of ultra-long pulse lasers. So, there is no need for skin cooling or direct skin contact by the laser. Thus, unlike the other lasers, our Nd:YAG can be used on all skin types, Fitzpatrick I through VI, including tanned or olive skin. Most patients will not require any anesthesia and will return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure.

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Laser Skin Resurfacing generates annually over $300 million in physician/surgeon fees with Average per Procedure fee over $2,000; this compares with monthly lease costs of under $850 for a 5-year lease or just below $1,300 for a 3-year lease on the FriendlyLight Er:YAG laser.

“I have used the FriendlyLight LightPod Er:YAG in my clinics for over three years... My experience with several different Er:YAG lasers was pleasantly extended with the use of TrulyPortable… It has given me the flexibility to move the device between my offices to use for small areas resurfacing and removal of benign, pre-malignant lesions and superficial skin cancers. I have used it for resurfacing of periorbital area and to remove growths like Seborrheic Keratosis, Solar Lentigines, Actinic Keratosis, Xanthelasma, etc.
I believe the LightPod will generate great interest and enthusiasm among physicians dealing with cosmetic issues of skin and for those who want to start using lasers..."

“I have had the opportunity of evaluating the FriendlyLight Erbium YAG system in my clinical practice for over a year. We have found the system to be user friendly and well tolerated by our patients. … We have treated numerous patients with this device and have had very nice clinical results following the procedure and are routinely utilizing it in our photorejuvenation management. We would recommend the FriendlyLight Erbium YAG as a device for other practitioners if they are considering an Erbium laser for their practice.”

“It has now been over a year since the FriendlyLight Erbium-YAG laser was introduced into my practice and I am very pleased with its use. The most unique aspects of this laser are its portability and effectiveness. By delivering 5 J /cm² of fluence, I have been able to treat many regional areas of the face for superficial lentiges as well as more advanced photoaging of the periocular and perioral skin. I find the limited thermal damage to produce less erythema compared to CO2 laser and discomfort is easily managed with local anesthesia. Patient acceptance has been enthusiastic as well. This laser system adds flexibility to my practice because it is easy to treat multiple patients in several of our treatment rooms including our operative suite because to its compact size. It is obviously the most easy laser to move between my two office locations…”

James Gordon, MD, Westchester Eye Associates, White Plains, New York
"I had the pleasure of using the FriendlyLight Er:YAG Laser in my office for over two years. I found the instrument to be easily portable, easy to use and effective with a wide margin of safety. …Its simple control and easy to read display panel make it possible for even the novice to operate this instrument. I have found the FriendlyLight Laser to be very effective in diminishing rhytids, blemishes and scars and in general toning up sagging skin. The minimal thermal damage gives a wide margin of safety and results in very rapid healing. Compared to the CO2 laser the FriendlyLight Er:YAG Laser causes much less thermal damage and much more rapid recuperation. Compared to microdermabrasion and chemical peels the FriendlyLight Laser’s technique is less messy and gives more constant results. Patients are pleased that there is only a brief period of erythema and that only one treatment session is necessary for profound results. … My patients are especially pleased with their final appearance and minimal inconvenience. From surgeon’s perspective the FriendlyLight Laser is a patient pleasing, revenue enhancing, cost effective addition to one’s practice. It may be used alone or in combination with blepharoplasty or other cosmetic procedures."
